THE NUTRITION HOME GARDEN
IMPACT STUDY

The European Union funded Assisting Communities in Creating Environmental and Nutritional Development (ACCEND) project has established 1500 Nutrition Home gardens (NHGs) in Matale, Monaragala, and Nuwara Eliya districts of which 200 NHGs were established in Wilgamuwa Divisional Secretariat Division (DSD) of the Matale district. This study provides information on the impact of the Nutrition Home Garden activity conducted in Wilgamuwa DSD, in providing healthy organic food to the beneficiary households and their children under the ACCEND project. Both economic value and nutritional contribution of NHGs to the households are quantified in the study. As the true economic value of home gardens have not been sufficiently quantified yet in the Sri Lankan context, this study sheds more light on the subject.
