An Initiative of School Feeding Program

We are thrilled to announce that ADRA has launched a School Feeding program in Wellawaya on 1st March 2023, we kicked off this program at Balaharuwa Secondary School with a meeting with parents and school administrators. During the inauguration we provided a nutritious meal to 256 children in Grade 1 to Grade 5 classrooms.

Through this initiative, we will be selecting 3 schools in Monaragala and Nuwara Eliya Districts to provide one nutritional meal per day for the children in school for 8 months. We believe that access to a healthy meal is crucial for a child’s growth and development, and we are committed to making a difference in the lives of these children.

This project was implemented by ADRA with the financial support of European Union under the AIM – RECCEND project. The monitoring and school-level implementation is led by the school society and zonal education office of Wellawaya.

We understand that many children in the Estate sector in Hatton area and rural sector of Wellawaya area lack access to nutritious food. The financial crisis in Sri Lanka has worsened the situation, resulting in children coming to school without breakfast or any food to eat during the school day. This has led to an increase in malnutrition, lower school attendance, and a lack of concentration in studies.

We hope that our School Feeding Program will provide a solution to this problem and help these children thrive in their academic and personal lives. Stay tuned for more updates on this project!”
